Salmon Restoration Campaign

More than 200 leading Northwest scientists have sent the President a letter explaining that "Enough time remains to restore them [salmon], but only if the failed practices of the past are abandoned and we move quickly to restore the normative river conditions under which these fish evolved." And that means opening the four dams on the Lower Snake River.

We are in the midst of an urgent and epic campaign to:
  • Restore nearly extinct Pacific Northwest salmon
  • Re-establish a once abundant commercial fishing industry
  • Honor our treaty obligations with Native American nations and Canadian government
  • Save millions of dollars in taxpayers money lost on ineffective salmon recovery efforts
The Issue: Pacific Northwest Salmon Recovery
Pacific Northwest Salmon are rapidly approaching extinction, largely due to dams, which block migration paths of fish swimming up and downstream. Four dams on Lower Snake River, between Lewiston, Idaho and the Columbia River, are particularly devastating to Snake River salmon.

What's Needed Most: Partial Removal of the Four Lower Snake River Dams
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has concluded that indeed, opening these dams is the only course of action that holds real promise for restoring salmon.

What We're Doing
To date, Wild Angels is the only organization that has succeeded in convincing a member of the U.S. Congress to ask the President to remove these costly dams. We also took six members of the Seattle City Council on our tours of the dams. In each case, our presentation of the issue, combined with their first-hand experiences at the dams inspired them to become active supporters of salmon recovery. On August 1, 2000 the Seattle City Council passed a unanimous 8-0 resolution favoring dam removal. Other successes on the salmon recovery campaign have included our efforts to encourage strong media coverage of the salmon issue. The Los Angeles Times joined us for a tour of the dams and subsequently published a very powerful editorial in favor of partial removal of the Lower Snake River dams. Their editorial ran under the headline "Salmon Need Right of Way". Another example of the effectiveness of our approach was our success in changing the minds of leaders in the Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters (WA, OR, ID) and thus avoiding their proposed resolution in opposition to dam removal.

"The Wild Angels' tour of the Snake River dams and the salmon restoration issue was extremely valuable. It made a dramatic difference in the City Council's thinking on this issue to be able to explore the dams in person. Wild Angels' staff did a great job of presenting the economic benefits associated with the proposed partial removal of these four dams. The Council's 8-0 vote in favor of partial dam removal would not have come out that way without the convincing work of Wild Angels. Seattle City Council member, Richard Conlon, September 2000" .
